Don’t get me wrong, as a fan of all things big hair AOR, I love a ballad. All my greatest mix tapes included a Journey, Reo Speedwagon or Foreigner tear jerker (Foreigner’s ‘Waiting For a Girl Like You’ always hit the spot), but discovering Leonard Cohen’s 1971 album ‘Songs of Love and Hate’ opened up a whole new structure for me regarding the mixtape. Love and hate are powerful emotions, and like any powerful emotion, they generally make great subject matter for songs.
I decided to create our very own 21st century version of a mixtape in this Spotify playlist and it pretty much covers both emotions. How I resisted putting on Journey’s ‘Faithfully’ is a mystery to me and my 17-year-old-self.
